We carry five types of bananas all of which are cold hardy. They will all loose their leaves at 32 degrees F after 20 minutes. But, if properly mulched (4 to 6 inches of pine bark mulch) These bananas will reemerge in the spring. You can cut them to ground level if their dormant trunks are not visually appealing.

Musa basjoo (Japenese Fiber Banana)

Hardiest of all bananas. Basjoo can survive air temperatures of up to -20deg F. if mulched properly. The banana loses its leaves at 32 deg F but can be cut back to near ground level and reemerges in the spring. It can grow to a height of 20 feet. The bananas are not edible.


Musa sikkimensis (Darjeeling Banana)

The Darjeeling Banana is very hardy to cold. Its origin is from the forests up to 2000m (6000ft) in the Himalayas of NE-India. It has leaves tinged with red, and purple. It can grow to 14 feet tall.
 


Musa velutina

A dwarf banana that grows only (4ft) tall. The flowers are pink to orange and the very ornamental fruits, dwarf bananas, are a bright, velvety pink and last for months at a time. They are edible and quite sweet, but also full of seeds. This species is very cold tolerant and will survive cold winters outside if heavily mulched. It makes an excellent indoor plant and is one of the few bananas that will actually flower and fruit in the house.


Musella lasiocarpa (Chinese Dwarf Yellow Banana)

Cold hardy banana that grows to about 5 feet tall. It Produces beautiful leaves and a brilliant yellow flower.


 


Musa raj puri

A specimen from the region of Rajapuri in India. Mature height is 9'. Produces mellow, sweet fruit. There is some wine color in the leaves and the trunk.  A tough and cold hardy plant from India that produces medium size sweet bananas. Only banana that can flower in 9 months.
